Now that is a wonderful thing!!

I thought it Highland Cow at first glance in spite of the thread title. I used to have a Highland Cow sporran and it looked rather like that.

This will send me scrambling to my vintage photos to see if there might be any comp. (Offhand I don't think so; that style cantle is from a period before sporrans started getting hairy, and is usually seen with leather bodies.)

    Here's something in that direction

I was waiting (with popcorn) for a negative reply and that was a good one, made me grin.

I will now temper my original reply. IMHO, which is worthless (🦃 ) the brown/red is better with brass and having now seen the white with a sparkly cantle I will agree white and sparkly looks better.

Overall favourite is still brown and brass and I won't be swayed....unless you come up with another great picture.

    I was just being cheeky.

I agree that brown or grey hair looks better with tweed, with Day Dress, than white hair does.

The Victorians wore long-hair (goat hair) sporrans with both Evening Dress and Day Dress, but the style tended to be different: brown/grey hair with leather cantle for Day, white hair with silver cantle for Eve, though white ones would often serve for both.

RIchard...........a bit off topic. Was the wee lad in the photo, an early attempt at cut & paste?

Yes, and I've seen at least one other Victorian photo like that.

My assumption is that the youngsters are deceased, and the photos are remembrances or tributes or something.

Child mortality was incredibly high by our modern standards.

Tobus , I love the sporran , always had an appreciation for goat hair sporrans of any color and the MOD cantle adds a special touch .

I also really like that kilt jacket as well , very sharp . Brown and tan jackets are very classic .

    Cheers , Mike

Thanks, Mike. That jacket is one of six vintage tweed kilt jackets I've acquired over the years from eBay. I love vintage tweed! I often tell myself I should move to a cooler climate so I can wear them year-round. I tend to gravitate towards earthy colours, and I rather tend to think that browns go with almost everything.

On the sporran colour debate, actually a vintage "dirty white" was my first choice when I started talking to Artificer about this project. I very much wanted an unruly Victorian-looking sporran built on a brass cantle. The project morphed into this one after a while, once he showed me some of the hides that I could choose from. When decision time came, I just couldn't get past the faded loveliness of the brown goat hair. But a dirty white long hair sporran is still on my wish list (probably with hair tassels), and one of these days I'll end up with one.
