Richard,
The MoD cantle is, of course, a 1950s(-ish) reproduction. But in terms of timelines of that style of cantle, I have always found it interesting that a very similar style does appear simultaneously with long hairy sporrans, though not necessarily mounted on one. In MacLeay's portrait shown below, you can see three typical long-hair Victorian style sporrans alongside one short fur sporran with a cantle very similar to the MoD style (and bonus points for it being worn by a Colquhoun).

And of course, another MoD-similar style/shape is seen on a long hair sporran, at left in the following portrait. I think that cantle is more plain, lacking the knobbly bits on the front, but in terms of a half-round brass cantle with button top, it does seem to coexist with long hair sporrans.

When I was a kid in south Georgia in the 50s, just about the highest compliment possible to offer was "Ya done good,
Bubba." I'm inclined to throw that in here. For both you and Scott. Lovely.

That's beautiful!
After years of searching, I've just bought a sporran with a MOD cantle and will be spending the Xmas holidays rebagging it - hopefully it will be ready in time for Hogmanay!
Anyway...wear this one with pride.

Fantastic sporran!
Definitely looks like Wookiee hair, though.
