    MacKintosh or MacPherson

A specimen of Wilsons’ ‘MacKintosh – Old Method’ tartan. This and their ‘MacKintosh – New Method’ were included in their 1819 Key Pattern Book. The difference is that the yellow stripe in the former comprised 4 threads wool and 6 threads silk, whereas the New Method included 6 threads of silk or wool only.

This is the tartan claimed to have come from the Crubin Plaid associated with the MacPhersons. Specimens of that in museums exactly match this Wilsons' specimen and it is likely that the so called Crubin Plaid is not as old as claimed.

The colours are very reminiscent of the Clan Chattan tartan. Both the MacKintoshes and the MacPhersons vied for the chieftainship of the Clan Chattan confederation.

Or to put it another way, the colours of the Clan Chattn tartan are reminiscent of this, this one being much older than the Clan Chattan.

Well, no, not quite 'vied for'. Different takes on history, perhaps, but those issues were long ago resolved by Lord Lyon into the future. That is done now. The Macphersons are recognised as a formative and essential part of Clanchattan, and that Macgillichattan Mor, Mackintosh of Torcastle, is the Clanchattan Chief. The Clanchattan confederation of clans is unique and is recognised as such into the 21C.
