NH Games - Lecture Series

My speaking visit to the NH Games in Sept is confirmed. They've ask me to do,2 or 3 session each day, each of about an hour including questions, on subjects of my choice.

I've some ideas but would be interested to get your thoughts. Obviously there is likely to be a range of pre-knowledge, or lack there of, and I want to pitch this appropriately. I will have access to PowerPoint and so much of my research material. Some initial ideas are:

The development of clan tartans, the Highland Revival to Victoriana.

The use of tartan as a Jacobite Symbol (I've done this a couple of time before and it always goes down well).

Tartan Myths and the truth behind them.

The development of military tartans.

For those that might go, or would be interested in something similar at another time, what would you like to hear?

I would love to hear your lectures but unfortunately I'm at the other side of the Continent, further from New Hampshire than New Hampshire is from old Hampshire, I would guess.

But yes, it would be great to address the development of Clan tartans and military tartans (seems to me the topics are interrelated).

One topic that I think would fascinate people is the earliest surviving tartans and an overview of 18th century tartans. In part the fascination is due to the current popularity of Outlander... you might as well benefit from this increased interest in 18th century Highland Dress and tartan while it exists.

I would tread lightly on the topic of "tartan myths" which is a touchy subject to many Americans.

Unfortunately not, not unless someone is going to invite me . Hopefully this will be the start of me getting back into visiting the US and Canada on a more regular basis.

I was born and brought up in Massachusetts only about an hour away from the games. I would like to suggest to you for your consideration to focus one of you lectures on the family tartans of Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island Scottish and tartans. I am sure you know a majority of the people in these area left Scotland during the Highland Clearances, and are Roman Catholic, Jacobite supporters. You and I have discussed this in the past, and they are thirsty for learning more about what the Scots brought to the Maritime Providences, and most of the Scottish in New England came down from Canada druing the 19th and early 20th century to leave the farms and mines to work in the factories and mills. Knowing and understand the tartans and how they traveled and gained popularity in Nova Scotia and such is very important and not understood. without a doublt the Jacobite Tartans would be a big hit, as Nova Scotia has several Jacobite monuments which they still have rememberance ceremonies, especially in Cape Bretton and Antigonish. Many Canadians and ancestors of Canadian Scottish attend this game. Maybe I can break away down her in DC and come up to the games so we can have diner one night. Just my humble suggestion.

I would look forward very much to meeting you there. Our new Chief will be the Honorary Chieftain of the games and Buchanan the Honored Clan so we won't be hard to find. A number of xmarkers attend as well. Be sure to stop by the tent.

This will be an international gathering of our Clan so there will be several hundreds of us there. If you wanted to do a case study on the history on one clan's tartans I think Buchanan might be an interesting one - there is our asymmetrical tartans, our symmetrical tartans, the old sett variations, recent weathered and reproductions and then the growth of clan 'fashion' tartans like Autumn Buchanan and Blue Buchanan which have us all puzzled.

But then again I have a certain prejudice on the subject.

Hopefully I can get away to attend a lecture.

Another topic of possible interest in that area of the country would be Scottish prisoners of war sold into New England.
Having survived horrific treatment by the government they were sold across the globe, and they engendered a host of
descendants who spread in all directions. My personal tie to this has thousands of descendants spread across the
South. He was one of 272 aboard the John and Sara, and together with those on the Unity they would have an
enormous number of connections across all of the New England states, quite a few of whom might be in attendance
at Loon Mountain. I know it's not tartan, but with your military background combined with your historian self, could
be a draw.
