Question Which mills use teflon coating?

I read/heard (somewhere) that some Scotland mills use Teflon coating on their wool tartans, while others do not. Does anyone know which of the major mills use Teflon coating on their wool?

    Marton Mills does...

I believe that Marton Mills applies a Teflon coating to their Jura range of tartans (or at least they did at one time!).

It saved me when someone slipped off the bleachers and landed on their backside at the Texas Scottish Festival some years ago. They had a bottle of sunscreen in their back pocket which EXPLODED on impact, literally covering the back of my kilt as I stood nearby. A lady seated behind me said "Don't move," and proceeded to quickly remove every bit of the sunscreen from my pleats with a roll of paper towels. My kilt was none the worse for the wear.

    I was amazed!

    Cheers,

I couldn't tell you which mills use teflon as a standard finish, but I'm fairly certain that most of the mills in Scotland ship their material to the same handful of companies for finishing. The mills don't actually finish the cloth themselves, since it requires a completely different set of heavy equipment and chemicals for the scouring, pressing, etc. The company that finishes the cloth can apply the teflon (as well as other specialised chemicals). Marton Mills uses (and is a joint owner of) Roberts Dyers & Finishers, for example.

This is to say that if you were ordering cloth from the mill as a custom weave, you could get it finished any way you want. Any mill that weaves cloth and sends it to a finisher can request the teflon application as part of the finishing process. Of course, this won't apply to stock cloth that has already been finished. But it's something to consider if you really wanted a teflon coating for a special project and were willing to go the custom weave route.

The House of Edgar "Nevis" range is teflon coated - it's the only one I'm aware of, though there may be others - the Nevis range is pretty limited and only 16oz fabric

...actually Marton Mills Jura is too.
