New to site
Hi everyone,
Let me introduce myself. My name is Dana Braun and I'm from St. Louis, MO. I have been lurking here for a while now and
decided to "show my face".
I've been interested in kilts for quite some time now. I work at a university and one day I had a quick look at a student wearing a kilt. As I remember it, it was typical casual wear, a sweatshirt, kilt, Birkenstocks. He was a rather short but stocky guy. I never thought "wow, a guy wearing a sk**t", it was more like, " how cool is that, a guy with a kilt". It was definately a masculine look.
So that peaked my interest initially, and then even though I'm aware of it's historical inaccuracies, Brave Heart just fueled the interest.
Obviously with a name like Braun I'm not aware of any Scottish blood in my family. But I don't think this should stop me from wanting to wear a kilt. Who knows, maybe somewhere back in history there is some Scot blood in my family lines.
I have a military background, serving 4 years in the US Marines, and another 5 years with the local Air National Guard unit.So the history of the Scottish military and kilts interests me very much. That's how I cam up with my username. I hope this is appropriate.
Unfortunately, my wife doesn't share my intrest in kilts. As a matter of fact, she's very against me wearing one. I guess she thinks they're sk***s. So I guess I'll have to work on her and try to change her mind.
I don't have a lot of disposable money for a kilt purchase, so I was trying to figure out a way to own one for the least ammount of money. Due to the generousity of one of your members, I now own a Sport Kilt. I know these are not the favored kilts at this board, but it was what I could afford and hopefully it will get me started with the kilted lifestyle.
I look forward to some great discussions and advice form this board. Thanks

Welcome!
Dana,
Always guid to have another Missourian on the board! Welcome!
Which university do you work for in St. Louis? I work for the local community college here in Springfield.
Did you make it to the Scottish games in Forrest Park this year? If you haven't, it's a "must" -- second weekend in October. St. Charles also has a nice Tartan Day celebration the first weekend in April which is a lot of fun!
I have quite a few friends who are active in the Scottish St. Andrew's Society of Greater St. Louis, so I can put you in touch with fellow "kilties" if need be.
Cheers,
Todd

Your in good company here.
Give the wife some time. She will go one of two ways over your kilt as soon as she sees the reactions from other women.
One, she will want to start showing you off.
Two, she will want to keep you to herself.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Todd,
I work at Washington University in St. Louis.
I haven't been to either of these events. But I'll have to make sure to get out to the Tartan Day in St. Charles.
Thanks for the welcome.

Dana,
Good to have on the forum.
Todd has a good idea! If you wear a kilt to
some of the celtic events, She will start to
see the beauty of it. It will become less strange and something she is comfortable with.

the wife...
There are quite a few "kilties" in St. Louis, including two full pipe bands, and St. Charles's Tartan Day festivities would be the perfect place to show how many gents are wearing them know -- besides, she could meet some of the spouses of said kilted gents (my wife, for example), and talk to them firsthand about being married to a man a kilt!
Besides, St. Charles is a lot of fun! The fesitivities take place right along the Missouri River in the historic district of the town, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants to peruse, including a very guid microbrewery! There is even a Scottish & Irish import shop, Thistle & Clover!
Cheers,
T.

Hi Freelander,
I'm sure my wife doesn't even want me to have a kilt much less wear it. But I'm hoping she'll get used to it eventaully.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Welcome to this place of kilt crazed individuals!
It is truly an honor to have you here.

Welcome Dana come on in, take yer shoes off and set a spell. Wives do tend to come around, especially after they see the reaction other women have to you in a kilt. My wife has reached the "show him off" stage and I've reached a point that I don't even watch for reactions any more.
