    Gretna Gold tartan

I have a fondness for purple. My Isle of Skye is probably my favorite kilt. My college colors were purple and gold, and a couple of recent events got me thinking that it might be fun to have a kilt in those colors. An online search turned up several purple tartans that were fairly dark, a couple that were hideous, and then this:

Gretna Gold, a Locharron fashion tartan that's apparently available in 10 and 13oz. weights. I rather like it.

    Questions for the rabble:

Has anyone seen this tartan as a kilt?

If the sett allows, what would you think of pleating to the stripe to show the lighter purple and vertical gold/white? Or would you pleat to the sett? I think pleating to the darker stripe might be too dark.

And are there any other purple/yellow candidates I might have missed?

    Thanks!

For a kilt you ideally want a 16oz material but a medium weight (Lochcarron Braeriach) would work. I'm not sure if this is a stock weight in either s you might be looking at a special weave.

More importantly, the SRT image is not entirtely accurate and this is actually a blue and green type tartan. something not at all clear from the image. See here.

I believe that Gretna Gold and Gretna Green are two different tartans.

I looked into other fabrics offered in the Gretna tartan. Here is the 11 oz. wool provided by Dalgliesh in Ancient Gold. There is a darker Gretna Modern Gold available from Scotsweb site.
I think these may be the colors you seem to be interested in rather than the fabric figheadair has clarified. Asking for a swatch from each mill ( or an email of a photograph of their product) might be better than risking getting the wrong product.

I believe pleating to the lighter purple with the white/yellow stripe prominent, would be a great contrast to the front apron showing the full sett.
