it's pretty clear that they no longer use the old RCAF name.

Didn't read far enough!

I realised that they had essentially done away with the whole unification scheme, but didn't realise that the RCAF title had not come back.

Up here, we still call them the Royal Canadian Air Force, even if it is unofficial. I have several family members that have served in the Air force for several generations, and they will only refer to it as the RCAF. Great links though, thanks Barb and Todd.

Hi Colin

My dad served in the RCAF during WW II, but he's been in the States since just after the war. He was the one who originally told me that the RCAF as a formal entity no longer exists. I'm sure he will be warmed and proud that those in the Air Force still refer to it as the RCAF!

Here, Here. Same goes for the BlackWatch and all the other Scottish Regiments despite whatever the British Government decides to do with them.

I think I'm right in saying that the official RCAF tartan can not be sold to just anyone,the local kilt seller told me he had to have proof of someone being in the RCAF just to order the material, and make a kilt.

The Scottish Lion in NH (www.scottishlion.com) sells it without proof of service, and I'm sure they're others out there that sell it as well.

There are tartans that require "permission" of the Chief and/or clan society before the material can be ordered (many times, the tartan is only available through them), and of course, the biggie, the Balmoral tartan, requires the permission of Her Majesty The Queen, but many of the military tartans are readily available for sale. (Cameron of Erracht is a regimental tartan, for instance).Cheers,

Interesting question. Frankly, I'd be surprised if there are restrictions, but who knows? Strathmore Woollens weaves the tartan, and I've ordered from them before. So, I'll just ask and let you know!
