Use long hose pulled up with shoes. and I like to push the hose down when using boots for a more casual look. Although here in Norway in the winter I use more often than not Boots with the hose pulled up too.
In all it give a better Balance to your look

I would wear the long hose pulled up with these shoes for a more dressy (meaning a bit more formal look. ) look.
I really do like the sweater with the hose pushed down. It's a more casual and very masculine look. I refer to your and Graham's pictures as a model of how to wear a kilt
