Pretty much what Steve said 
Everything in the kind of trad kilt that I will teach you how to make is hand stitched (i.e., not using a sewing machine). If you've never held a needle and thread before, you could practice a little ahead of time just sewing any old thing (like buttons), but you don't need to.
