Inverted Pleat

Hi everyone,
I’m in the midst of making an 8 yard kilt with 16oz MacDonald of Clanranald weathered tartan. Anyway, I’m about to go to the part where I make the inverted pleat. I’m reading the instructions from The Art of Kiltmaking and my head just isn’t wrapping around it for some reason. Would anyone have any pictures of doing this step? I find I’m more of a visual learner and if I saw someone doing this I’d likely be able to figure it out.

I'm sorry that no one has replied - are you still perplexed?

Where have you got to in the process?

I usually make reverse kingussie kilts rather than the traditional style, but if you can spell out the part of the process causing the problem we might be able to sort it between us.

Thank you for replying, I am still a bit perplexed. Luckily, I have other traditional kilts, so I looked at them and I understand what the inverted pleat is and what it should look like when I’m done. What I don’t understand is how to get to that point once all your pleats are sewn in place. I’m looking at page 80 of TAOK and I start to get confused when it talks about stitching the last pleat to the under apron.

Hi - sorry I missed your post. Are you confused about stitching the last pleat to the apron edge or about basting the inverted pleat once all the pleats are stitched as well as stitched to the underapron? I'm happy to answer either question and can take some pics tonight.

Absolutely! I may not get to this tonight. Things are a bit chaotic here, and my free time can evaporate without notice! All of the teaching I'm doing with my students is now online, so that's a new challenge. And our daughter, son-in-law, and 6-year-old grandson are stranded here with us for the duration from Switzerland (long story). We're all working remotely - our daughter is in a PhD program at ETH Zurich, and ETH is shut down as well, so everyone there is working remotely anyway, as we are. And we're sharing the duties of homeschooling the Fabulous Young Connor of the Overabundant Energy, whom I adore and whose teachers in Zürich are faithfully sending lots of work for him to do in English, German, and French..gaak! I'm the designated French mentor, and I'm resurrecting the French that I learned over half a century ago...!

All that to say that I'll try hard to get pics to you tomorrow morning.

No worries. I can feel your pain with teaching online. I’m a grades JK-4 resource teacher and I also, well did up until a few weeks ago, taught JK/K phys.ed.
