box-pleating during COVID
Hello, comrades.
As a schoolteacher, I'm home and trying to do this teach-at-home thing but I want to do something new and different. Even though I have plans to learn some kilt-making this summer, I think I'm going to take this opportunity of COVD-19 times to use Prof. Barbara Tewksbury's book THE ART OF KILTMAKING and try my hand at making a four-yard box-pleated kilt. I have two belted plaids -- really, each just 4 yards of double-wide 16 oz tartan -- and I'm finding that I don't wear them as much as my lighter-weight belted plaids. Perhaps the first one to go under the knife will be my Canadian Maple Leaf tartan. If I don't suck at this, perhaps I'll toss up some photos here and there. <deep breath!>
Best,
Jonathan

Great idea Jonathan. TAoK is a great way to learn however if you want to master the 4 yard kilt you also need the supplementary book by Barb and Matt that focus solely on the 4 yard kilt. Beware though, this skill is addictive and you will find yourself watching less sport and waxing more thread. Please post your work, would love to see.

Garth,
Thanks for the tip! Yes, I have the supplement and am very excited. I'm hoping that it IS addictive as I have several belted plaids that I can turn into traditional kilts. Ooooo.
Best,
Jonathan

I have 4 yards 16 oz Hume beautifully woven to swap for 4 yards of what you have. Like for like. I have made a 4 yard kilt and have 4 yards spare:

Kilt making is definitely addictive - I have lined up all the kilts which need to be remade or finished off, and they have made quite a long line along the front of the cupboards in my craft room.

I'm sure that would make for a good photo-op!

At the moment is is a row of wonkily stuffed pillow cases - perhaps when they get to the ready to be sewn stages they will be more photogenic.

Barb,
Sadly, I've not progressed much further -- this past week was intense for me with on-line teaching but now I've more time so I hope to lay things out tonight and start tomorrow!
Best,
Jonathan
