A nice eBay find

I recently picked up this sporran on eBay. No date but the style and quality looks to be c1930-40. The seal-skin has taken on a lovely yellowish hue. Th metalwork is not silver but does polish up, nice quality chain too. It just shows that there are some quality pieces to be had if one keeps an eye on things and is prepared to wait.

I watched that auction Peter, lovely piece. You can tell that whoever made that sporran took time to choose the optimal piece of sealskin for the front panel. There some gems that appear from time to time if you know what to look for! You’re well set for a fine collection of heirloom quality vintage sporrans.

The cantle is probably solid German Silver, the standard metal for sporran, crossbelt, dirk, bagpipe etc fitments from at least the mid-19th century through the mid-20th. It was cast, and worked from sheet.

Generally there were three price-points of metal fitments: 1) plain solid German Silver 2) ditto silver-plated 3) plain solid Sterling Silver.

IMHO solid German Silver, when polished up, looks far better than nickel and chrome, which are so common today.

I used to have that identical cantle, however it had three knobs, the centre knob larger than the side ones, which was often seen in the old days. That cantle came on a long hair sporran.
