Exactly so. Out on the hill is not often the place for sartorial elegance, so there is really little reason to even wear a sporran. Your back pack, or your pockets, including "poachers pockets" in your outer layer will carry much more than a sporran.

I've never had any issues with the sporran in the conventional position and that includes steep fast descents off track and steep ascents...

I wear mine in the front, always, only sliding it to the side if necessary to get through a small space. Although the point is well taken that a sporran doesn’t hold much that one might want to take on a day hike, I can’t bear to wear a kilt without one.

I just wear my sporran as I always do when hiking.

However I do make sure not to overfill it. So I use a belt holster for my phone and keep what's in my sporran to the basics (glasses, folding knife, handkerchief, comb, and car keys). I think keeping your sporran light makes a difference for comfortable hiking as it will stay in place and not bang about as you move.

Thanks, Jamie. I usually put my keys, Swiss Army knife, and my iPhone into my sporran. I think it's the mobile that makes it a it too weighty for comfort. I'll try your suggestions.

As with many of your photos, you look very good but the background is much better looking! Would that be a sequoia?

That is one of the mighty Redwoods at Henry Cowell State Park.

Due to the COVID 19 Disease, Santa Cruz County has not allowed visitors in from out of county. I was a little sad about this as HC is my favorite park. It made me very happy that this past weekend Santa Cruz County relaxed its rules on visitors (as long as proper safety protocols were followed ) and I could hike along the Redwoods again

Late to the party here but nope. I don't do anything different with the sporran. I don't carry my phone when hiking so the only things in there are wallet and car keys. If you have a choice of sporran, I've found a simpler pouch style or larger "Rob Roy" style to be less prone to bumping around than one with a rigid back. But that's just my preference.

Per suggestions, I decreased my sporran's weight from keys/knife/mobile to eliminate the mobile and indeed, the lighter weight made it more comfortable. I tried a Rob Roy style sporran and found that it bounced around even more than my D-shaped sporrans.

Based on a suggestion from somebody else, I bought myself a cheap bum bag from amazon.com. While I would prefer a traditional sporran, when hiking/hillwalking for lengthy periods of time I have found this bum bag to be superior. I completely acknowledge that the look is not traditional, and it’s not the look I prefer, but given context I think it’s the best solution for me. 4-yard box pleated kilt made by Isaac Walters in the hunting weathered Stewart tartan.
