Based on a suggestion from somebody else, I bought myself a cheap bum bag from amazon.com. While I would prefer a traditional sporran, when hiking/hillwalking for lengthy periods of time I have found this bum bag to be superior. I completely acknowledge that the look is not traditional, and it’s not the look I prefer, but given context I think it’s the best solution for me. 4-yard box pleated kilt made by Isaac Walters in the hunting weathered Stewart tartan.

It makes sense and is much more comfortable!

I think that is why, in the old paintings, they are wearing their sporrans to the side.

I wonder how those are attached: on their belt or on a dedicated strap.

When I've seen pictures of older sporrans, they usually have a wide leather loop that I think would attach to the belt.

I tend to have no problems with wearing a sporran in the conventional position. Though, for some odd reason it tends to cause kilt bunching issues when I tackle long smooth inclines. For those occasions I usually just rotate it to the side.

On longer trip I will sometimes forgo the sporran due to it getting in the way of a hip belt. If you ever do anything in the snow, leave furry sporrans at home! I find those can turn into nice crotch bashing iceballs if you don't keep an eye on them hahahah.
