Highland bling… For those that like this sort of stuff.

I started playing around with the idea of building a Scottish style powder horn a few weeks ago. I was lucky enough to find a horn that was a beautiful colour and someone had started some carving on one end and then gave up. I rather liked the shape and went ahead and bought it for a very good price. (under $30.00)I then started pulling together odds and ends to create the look I was going after.
Years designing costumes and props for theatre teaches one that everything and anything can have another purpose.
After a little experimentation, a few old sporran bells, and some broken jewellery, this is what I came up with.


Had so much fun doing the first one I started on the second one right away.


It has a flattened horn style and was a little easier to embellish because of it’s shape.
All in all, a rather nice couple of prop pieces for highland portrait painting.

I am sorry, but I cannot help but wonder what is the purpose of such an endeavour?

I suppose like any creative impulse ...to give form, voice or expression to an idea might be the primary purpose for creating anything.
I think I also mentioned they will likely be used as props.

To have a blingy powder horn, I imagine. What is the point of any endeavor? I'm sure if we all had to come up with a practical explanation for why we do what we do in our spare time, many of us would be at a loss. What is the point of me playing music or dancing over swords or, well, posting on the internet about kilts? Because I want to and I enjoy it.

I don't think it is necessary for you to have to justify what you do. If you enjoying making reproduction powder horns good luck to you.

Being an owner of a number of original Highland bling items, I wish to complement you on the powder horns you made. You have an artistic eye for detail and produced interesting reproductions.

By the way, original powder horns still come up on the the more reputable auctions houses in the U.K. Also, The House of Labhan, worth while going to their website, has Highland bling and other Highland items for sale, even powder horns now and again.

Thank you for your kind comments on these pieces. I was aware that vintage ones do sometimes come up for auction. The ones I have seen on line are still quite expensive.
Well worth it, no doubt , due to the fantastic craftsmanship involved and their individual providence.
Beautiful works of art in themselves.
