Nottingham Scottish Association Burns Night toast.
I've only recently discovered the Nottingham Scottish Association in Nottingham,UK and after attending a couple of their Friday evening Scottish Country Dance classes, attended their Burns Night dinner. A formal affair, but it did give me the opportunity to dig out my 44 year old Montrose doublet for around only the 4th or 5th time ever as my black argyll jacket, worn every Sunday at school is definitely very second hand.
However I've never attended a Burns night where the toast was raised by the men, whilst standing with one foot on their chair and the other on the table. I just managed to take a picture of the gentleman opposite me whilst rocking on the soft cushion of the chair and attempting to hold both camera and glass steady!
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

A while back i was watching on YouTube a BBC production of the different traditions in the British army. I cannot remember the unit if it was Scots Guards or Coldstream Guards; but their tradition is when an officer retires at his retirement party the final toast to him/her is made standing on their chairs.

Since it was in Nottingham, maybe that was the way Robin Hood made his Burns Supper toasts?
There is a Hood tartan as well as a Robin Hood tartan as it turns out.

I lived in Nottingham for about 6 years - never knew there was a Scottish Association or a Burns Night (although I did have many occasions to wear my kilt) although I have come across this type of toast before (I think it's called Highland Honours and might be something to do with absent friends) but for the life of me, I can't remember where - I assume the result of a good night, and perhaps one too many toasts...

I've lived in Matlock for 29 years and this year was the first i've heard of it. I have been associated with Clan Derby for around 6 years, but only found out about Nottingham Scottish through a link to the Burns Night from a friend who runs ceilidhs that I attend.
