Supporting the Real Mackenzies with a Mackenzie (?)

OK. I have seen several things here and there that give opposing views of wearing tartans. Some say you should wear Tartan X only if you have lineage in Clan X, while others say you can wear any tartan you please as long as you are respectful.

That being said, I am currently eyeing a Mackenzie kilt. While I am not of Mackenzie, I want to wear this kilt to support The Real Mackenzies, which is one of my favorite bands. (I also happen to have friends with this name as well, and friends with connections to the Mackenzie clan. And I do like the pattern and colors of the kilt.)

What say ye in the group?

Opinions differ, but if you are wearing a kilt to honor your friends it sounds like a good enough reason. My personal opinion, which is worth about a pint of hen's teeth, is that the tartan that you wear should represent something to you. That can be clan, family, heritage, or anything that is meaningful to you. Clan tartans only date from about 200 years ago or so, long enough to establish a tradition, but arguably it gives people some leeway. Be aware as well that there is a Mississippi state tartan as well. State as in the actual state, not the college. Hotty Totty.

Clan tartans (with a small number of exceptions) are really a 19thC invention (or re-imagining if you will) - but shhh - it upsets the kilt kops.

Wear what you will, but wear it well...

    Just wear it.
if you like the colours and design- wear it
if the colours will look good with tops and shoes/boots already in your wardrobe-wear it
if it’s not a restricted tartan- wear it.
if you think socks and sandals are an appropriate clothing mix - just don’t wear that ever

    wear it and look fabulous

    from a real McKenzie

wear it. Honoring friends etc (or the Seaforth Highland regiment) is all the reason you need. Actually wearing it lust because you like it is sufficient reason. Make sure you show pictures though. If there aren't pictures it didn't happen;^)
