Scots & Hawaiians
Some years ago my wife and I attended the Games in Hawaii. It was a great experience, particularly when you reflect on the information exchanged just by showing up with an inquisitive mind and a genuine respect for the foundational culture individuals identify with. For example, the Hawaiians like the Scots. In talking to a number of people of both inclinations I think I know why both groups were as brothers to one another:
Both are of a culture that was overrun by a colonizing power that tried to strip their mode of dress, their language, their culture and their family structures. For the Scots and for the Hawaiians, those efforts ultimately failed. Each retains their pride in their roots and cultural imperatives.
Thus, we arrived to a warm welcome and celebrated in the warm embrace of commonly held mutual respect.
