Some news - just shared by Margaret Morrison Ltd from Robert Mackie

In December we shared the sad news that we would be stopping production of our traditional hats. Today we have much happier news to share....



Shortly after that we were approached by one of our long-time customers (House of Tartan Ltd) with a proposal to continue manufacturing our traditional hats in Scotland.



We are delighted to announce we have since agreed they will manufacture and distribute Balmorals, and Glengarrys under license to us in a new facility, hopefully in Stewarton the Bonnet Toun where we have made them for so many years.


We are contributing equipment, machines and materials. We will also loan them some of our highly skilled and experienced employees to help train new workers to Mackie’s high standards. Going forward, we will continue to supply the specialist customised trims they will need.


House of Tartan Ltd will shortly be launching a fund-raising campaign to raise awareness of this iconic Scottish product and to help with training funding.



This will all take time. They are estimating perhaps 6 to 9 months. But in the meantime, they are holding some stocks of Mackie manufactured headwear for immediate shipment. Not all styles, sizes or colours are there, but many are. Please ask them!

Over the weekend, I contacted House of Tartan about a Balmoral bonnet I'm interested in. Today, they replied that the color I requested is out of stock and went on to say:

"Production of hats is unlikely to happen this year as we are still trying to get various grants and funding to help set up the production".

The title should read, Update 8/14/2023.
