Quality Sporrans for less money

Classic EW1 sporran, almost certainly Scottish-made, for around $50.

For whatever reason the EW1 cantle hasn't caught on with the Pakistani makers, for re-casting.

Note the wear to the seal fur at the bottom.

Interestingly it was the EW1 cantle which, in brass, was initially the go-to cantle for the EW-topped Hunting sporrans by WE Scott. Later the EW3 (pierced version of the EW2) took over, for some reason.

For $70 (free shipping, in the USA) a rabbit fur sporran with targe, almost certainly by WE Scott, with the gold oval Made In Scotland Real Leather stamp.

I've never been a fan of this style, but horses for courses.

The most basic of the old patterns of Day sporran, with non-braided tassels, for around $20.

It's a big bargain for those in the UK and perhaps the EU, not so much for the USA due to high shipping cost.

It's a perfect example of the back of a sporran telling us much more about country of origin, maker, and time-period than the front can do.

But we're not shown the backs, so we have to guess. ("Never guess. Guesses are always wrong" ...the words of one of my university teachers.)

The sporran bottom right has the classic "D" (diamond) cantle by FN/D&N which, if it's genuine, depending on age, could be nickel, silverplate, sterling, or chrome plate. It appears to be seal. Only the back can tell us if it's what it seems to be, by WE Scott, and if so, what time-period. It could be anywhere from the mid-20th century to today, the back will inform us. OR it could be a Pakistani copy, unlikely but possible.

The sporran bottom left is more intriguing. It could be from the early 20th century by one of the classic makers, or the crude effort of a modern hobbyist, or anything in between. The back will tell us.

A nice WE Scott brown "Day" sporran with bovine front.

Seems a bit older, the leather of the flap seems more supple than what they use nowadays.

The bad thing is the seller's history: he's only sold two items, one he shipped to the seller, the other he didn't.

The seller's listing says it is by Kommando Kilts and made in the US - but the pictures of the rear of the sporran show the familiar gold oval 'Made in Scotland' and my guess this has come out Scott's workshop in Edinburgh.

He is selling it as new without tags, which it might have been at one time, but it looks very shop-soiled if that really is the case..! Note that the chain-strap D-ring tab is missing.

I would say this is used, but in reasonable condition.

The seller seems to be showing a lack of knowledge and experience here, but this is a good opportunity to acquire a 'vintage' classic-style day sporran by a good Scottish maker.

The asking price is about double what I would expect this sporran to be on eBay.uk (see here for example https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176080745014), but if shipping cost from the UK is taken into account, this may have appeal in the US home market.

And think of what the fur is...

I don't remember if I or someone else has mentioned this before, but there's an Etsy seller Toby McGregor Sporrans who is selling apparently self-made sporrans which are on the rough-and-ready side and don't appeal to me.

However mixed in with that lot are a few nice vintage Scottish-made sporrans for reasonable prices. Unfortunately you have to dig through pages of his strange creations to find all the vintage sporrans.
