    "New" member intro

    Greetings,

I have been a member for a couple of years actually but have never posted anything yet. I go by Larry (middle name) most of the time and a coworker started calling me "Lehddy" a few years ago so that precipitated my username, PapaLehddy. I lived in Boise, Idaho for 30+ years but am now residing in Grantsville, UT.

My daughter and her family are currently visiting Scotland for the first time and she requested that I send her an image of our PETRIE tartan. But most websites that are for profit purveyors of all things Scottish can't produce an authentic tartan. Because Petrie is a sept of Clan MacGregor, most often I get referred to MacGregor.

Is there anyone among this fine throng of brothers and sisters familiar enough with how to authenticate alleged "authentic" family crests and tartans who can guide me to a reliable source for sept Petrie history and tartan info?

I'm new to the whole tradition and would like to head up the correct path to reliable info. My next quest will be to obtain a kilt for myself and my sons. ;-)

    Many thanks,

    PapaLehddy Petrie

    Welcome from Northern Colorado!

Petrie has a listing here: https://www.houseofnames.com/petrie-...-crest#History. As does this site: https://www.tartanclancrest.com/petr...y-history.html. These both are the Coat of Arms. The clan badge is relegated to MacGregor as you have noted.

www.electricscotland.com has some good research on it. Maybe you can dig information up there.

Again, welcome out of the shadows!!

    Welcome from Southeast Texas!

Be wary of the "family crest" websites, as arms belong to individuals, not families. You're liable to get a mish-mash of elements from your clan's "garter and buckle" and portions of individual's arms.

A search for the Petrie tartan yields, MacGregor, Fraser and Drummond...

    Good luck and welcome!

    Welcome to the rabble.

There are sources that list Petrie as a sept of the MacLaren clan as well. My Petrie relatives were French according to our genealogy research, but I insist they haven't gone back far enough. There was a website for a Clan Petrie in Nova Scotia several years ago but it seems to have disappeared. I don't think they had a tartan.
    Cheers,

    David
