You could always just build up callouses.

I cannot comment on the modern kilt styles/materials: but with the traditional heavyweight kilt for walking, it is only in recent years that the tails on men's shirts have been so reduced in length that there is not in fact a layer of softer material between the kilt and genitals. Whilst it is common today to see enactors wearing the long highland shirt so that the hem of the shirt is nearly as low as the hem of the kilt.

The longer shirt puts an entirely new complexion upon the 'no underwear' idea: for the shirt itself acts as underwear.

So when faced with such a problem the answer is to either wear a longer tailed shirt, sew a patch of softer material inside the lower apron, or wear a suitable pair of underpants.

It is interesting for copying the ways of the past in full necessitates doing so fully, and that includes such aspects as the the shirt carrying out the role of underwear.

Here it is also necessary to consider the military need for financial economy, and so reducing the expenditure kitting out the soldiers of highland regiments. There also the problem of lice with the kilt when worn on active service: not of necessity a problem today--but--maybe not something I should enlarge upon.

Having said that, some highland units were issued with underpants and did in fact wear them.

    Hey Ron,

You can always stitch-in a VERY SOFT piece of material in the general area. Do it on the inside of the under-apron. Since the flap would be inside the kilt, it wouldn't be seen. If made just long enough, it would also serve as a "privacy curtain" when you're squatting or stepping-up.

You might even check into getting a piece of faux fur. I know that WalMart has the pieces for around $5, and there's all sorts of colors.

There exists a device called a ManHood, which as I understand it is to protect the "fire helmet". Not sure if it can be worn without underwear, but I'll try to find more information about it sometime soon.
