Any turkey hunters out there? Yesterday I was turning a turkey trumpet. I have made lots of them for friends. But this one was going to be special. I was making it out of Mopani as it has a good tone. It was coming out beautifully, but there was one little place that I was going to make better. Should have left well enough alone. I just wanted it to be perfect. As soon as I touched it with the tool it disintegrated. Pride certainly does come before the fall. I’ll start again Monday and see if I have learned anything.

Is a trumpet the same call as a yelper? I have a plastic one from primos is so.

I’ve seen some pretty amazing yelpers made from actual turkey bone.

Yes, much the same thing. Gave one to a friend from church last year. He told me he made one call on it and the Tom came straight to him. I also used to make slate calls.

My Methodist grandmother came to live with us when she got older, her family were all Methodist miners from Cornwall. There are only two species of humans where I'm from, Methodists and Baptists, and our tiny town had one tiny church for each. About Primitive Methodist I don't know, they're whatever sort of Methodists the Victorian Cornish miners were, no alcohol, no swearing, no card-playing, modest in dress.

Abraham Lincoln quoted the Bible often.

Being shown a modernist painting, and asked for his opinion, Lincoln said

OC, I am sure since you have Cornish miners in your family you must have enjoyed many pasties. You got me thinking of them, haven’t made any in a long time. Might just make some soon.
