beat up for calling it a skirt?
So here in America anyway, there's a saying that calling a kilt a skirt or dress will get you beat up in Scotland. I know a guy who got mooned for something like that but never of anyone actually getting beat. Any funny, scary, or other of these "payback" stories anyone?

I was in the South of France and passed a couple sitting at a pavement cafe. The guy said in a sneering way "J'aime bien ta jupe", (jupe = skirt). His lady was not impressed and gave him a gentle smack.

I have never heard of exactly that happening anywhere. I have experienced good natured leg pulling on occasion in parts of the UK and some very unpleasant "leg pulling" in Glasgow on more than one occasion many years ago, but that was for wearing the kilt, not for describing the kilt as a Skirt. But in reality, I suppose, it could happen anywhere, as things tend to do. So for what it is worth, I think it is wisest not to call the traditional kilt a skirt, wherever you are in the world. Someone, somewhere, is bound to take serious offence, sometime.

In my experience you are more likely to offend a Scotsman by mistakenly identifying him as “English” than any reference to a kilt.

I would hope that any man wearing a kilt would be a true gentleman and handle the comment as such.

Of course that is the hope. But, I would not rely on it!

On the occasion that someone calls it a skirt, I correct them and tell them it a kilt and so called because that is what happened to the last bloke who called it a kilt.... he was "kilt".

The way I see it, a kilt is a type of skirt traditionally but not exclusively worn by men. Best not worry about it too much.

Don't know others, that locally (here in Denmark) wear the Kilt.
So don't know, what they would do. - There's a small number of Scots here. But if they own/use Kilts?
Otoh. I'we met a couple ignorants. Once i shook the head, The other time, He was simply ignored.
Quite a few smiles, and a smile/nod, the other way. And some remarks as well. But never any direct offences.
Actually a few, just the opposite. Especially from the other gender. You know what i mean... ;)

I did once have a Scotsman tell me that the reason for carrying a sgian dubh while wearing a kilt was so you could deal with the people who tried to call it a skirt. He was joking though.
