Instead of 2 equal lengths for making a kilt, could one use three equal pieces, and have two splices within the pleats?

Trying to use up matching remnants....

Sure, why not.
The reason it is usual to use two pieces is that you usually buy one piece half as long as you need and rip it into two.
There is no reason you couldn't piece each pleat if you REALLY had to.
Just be careful to get the pattern aligned perfectly.

Steve's right... again. In fact, you can use any multitude of pieces as long as the seams are deep in the pleats. I know one kiltmaker that actually uses one piece for the front apron, one for the pelates on the left, one for the pleats on the right, and one for the under apron. The pieces are already surged and in-stock for assembly. The differenct waist sizes will determine which length of piece is used for the pleats.

I would not suggest it, but I've seen one kilt that had alternating pleat colors (green, white and gold). the work to join all that must have been a real pleasure.

Yup! I've had to do this on occasion when someone brought me tartan but didn't order enough. It'll work as long as the dye lot and weave is the same.

If you're using tartan, just be absolutely sure that the twill line goes the same way in all pieces! I once saw a kilt that had a reverse in the twill line at the seam. Ugh.
