I've seen the hiker's version at a hiker festival, and the only negative comment I have about it is that the D-rings will chafe under the hip belt of a backpack. If you're just doing day hiking, the sporran on the side makes sense, but it'll hurt if you wear them for long-distance hiking. As anyone who backpacks knows, anything on the hips hurts under the hip belt of a pack - belt loops, bunchy elastic waistbands, and so on. Maybe if the sporran attached via velcro straps, or snapped onto two cloth loops instead of D-rings....
