Starting up a kilt night
Greetings folks,
Does anyone have any advice for getting a Kilt Night started at a local pub? I presume you contact the owner and make the suggestion, and tout the advantages. Has anyone had experience with this? How was the request received?
Cheers, Rick

Rick,
It might be best to find a bar, pub, or tavern depending on what they call themselves that has a Celtic theme to it. Kilt wearers would bring them more business, and those not wearing kilts will go and tell there friends about what they saw. Make it a continual thing (same place and same weekend of the month) so that others will know when and where it is. It would help if they had a Celtic band of some sort performing that night to also bring in others, it would also show your appreciation to the band.
Maybe you would like to offer the ladies some insentive to join you and let them wear tartan and call it a Kilt and Tartan Night. If enough show up the owner may offer discounts on the drinks if you are wearing kilts or a tartan to show how much they appreciate the business.
Good luck, and don't get discouraged, it will be fun even if it is just a few, remember many great things started with just a few.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing here in Calgary. The biggest problem is I only know of a couple other kilt-wearing fellows, so getting the word out may be a pain.
I plan to stop in at what i think would be the ideal pub tomorrow to talk with the management. It's called the "Kilt & Caber", and on Burn's day there were a number of kilted people there.
I'll let you know how things turn out.

Uncle Ricky. Check these guys tour schedule out. They play a lot in your area and always wear kilts.

And some FINE kilts that they wear too! 8)
Rick, just find the pub and a night that a Celtic Music act will be there. Searson is another local to you, and they are wonderful. Nice people too. Tell "Dad" hi from me.
Once you have a few guys interested, just go! There's NOTHING formal or planned about these things usually. It's just a matter of joining-up in a predetermined spot... in kilts. It's that simple of a concept. For that matter, get a couple cases of beer and a grill, and have a time on your patio/deck.
Make it like any other casual, social night out... just wear kilts. We've been doing this in Philadelphia for a long time and never called them "Kilt Nights" until XMarks came up with the designation. We would pick-out where our favorite bands were playing, get a few cars loaded with guys (and significant others) in kilts... and GO.

two quick points
1) Jimmy is spot on about kilts nights. Just plan to meet up, and find a good pub. Try out a few different dates, and venues, and see what everyone likes. Once you have a good set up and a favourite location, then discuss specials and advertising with them.
2) I would have to disagree with the "Kilts Night" designation coming from Xmarks. Vince Hemingson set up the Vancouver "Kilts Night" about 6 months before Xmarks came on the scene. Since then, that's all we Vancouver boys have ever called it on kiltmen, Tom's (when kilt wearers were allowed), Xmarks, and others. I am sure they have had these nights in numerous cities for ages, Vince just gave it on online name. I should add that Vince also came up with the design for UK's survival kilt after his expedition into Borneo http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/
Just my 2 bits.
