    Searching for a clan

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good resources for searching for Scottish heritage and clan affiliations by surname?

I have a close friend by the name of McElroy here in Tucson, and it occurred to me I'd like to dig a little on it.

This is a good place to start. It gives a brief clan history, along with a picture of the tartan, and clan badge: http://www.scotclans.com/index.html

Here is another: http://www.clanfinder.scottishthemes...clanfinder.asp It is expecially helpful if a person's family is not a recognized independent clan. The search will show all the clans to which a family name is related, either by blood or alliance. The tartan, clan badge, and a map showing the location of the family's origin is shown.

For example the Scottish Clans site does not show a reference to McElroy, while the Mini Clan Finder shows McElroy's to be septs of Clan Chattan and
    Clan Grant.

    Galant,
According to this site, McElroy is a sept of clan Grant.

I know this question has already been answered, but in the future, if anyone needs a name referenced, I have all the resources at my fingertips at work. My work email is tartans@scottishtartans.org. I never mind looking names up for people.

    Aye,
    Matt

    McElroy...

According to Smith's "Tartan for Me!", McElroy or MacElroy is associated with the aforementioned Grants, or the Clan MacGillivary.

    Cheers,

    Doc,

Thanks for the links. I'm looking into my own heritage, too, and I'm sure the link will be helpful.

    Matt,

I'll be taking you up on your kind offer soon. I'll dispatch a personal email soon.

Hope you guys don't mind indulging a newbie!

    Cheers!
