The tartan options just keep on coming.......
While perusing through a book I recently purchased Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia (not that good, but the sale price was good), I discover that my wife's maiden name, Wood, is Scottish. In addition, using a link that Doc Hudson provided in another topic, I find that the name Wood is also linked to Farquharson, one of my favorite Clan names!!!
I also affirmed that my ggg-grandmother was an Armstrong - another one!!!
I have, however, found out that my ancestors, the Jesses, have been in the States for quite some time, and it turns out that name may be English, and not a derivation of Jesseman, a Gordon family.
I'm still going to make a Gordon kilt, though, as I used to have a huge crush on a Gordon woman back in my college days (but don't tell my wife )

Well, my last name is Wood, so I may be able to tell you a little bit of what I have found. Wood is a sept of the clan Watson (very nice ancient colours) which in turn is a sept of the Clan Buchanan. Wood does have a tartan, but it is very hard to find. I know that my side of the Wood family lived on Stuart and Douglas lands (add a few more tartan possibilities). I had not heard of the link to Farquharson, can you provide that link for me.
Check out this link for a bit more information http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/stoz/wood.html

Here is the link, as posted by Doc Hudson:
"Here is another: http://www.clanfinder.scottishthemes...clanfinder.asp It is expecially helpful if a person's family is not a recognized independent clan. The search will show all the clans to which a family name is related, either by blood or alliance. The tartan, clan badge, and a map showing the location of the family's origin is shown."
thanks for the info..

Scottish Clan & Family Encylopedia...
Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia (not that good, but the sale price was good)
Beerbecue,
If you're referring to Way and Squire's "Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia", then you've actually got a very reliable resource on your hand -- it's one of the better works out there on the subject. Both authors are affiliated with the Lyon Court and the Heraldry Society of Scotland, and "know their stuff".
Cheers,
Todd

I think it is good for the 'Official' Clans,as there is quite a bit of information in the book... It just didn't have what I thought it would contain. So I shouldn't fault the book for that.....
I think perhaps I need to do some genealogy research on my own, just cough up the money for the services, and get to it.....
