Side sporrans are sold I think by 'Scotweb' and are a sensible alternative to the conventional sporran-more so when laden with wallet-keys-cash etc.
Whilst if a sporran is worn conventionaly if low enough to offer any wind protection it is too low for comfort and safety, too it will impede walking.
I've worn a side sporran for day to day wear for some years now, and it has never attracted comment: whilst also being much more convenient.
By the way the Hill Walker and the Gentlemen's kilts have provided pockets for many years now: so there is nothing new in having a kilt with a pocket/s.
