Disappointment
My wife and I traveled down to Olympia last weekend and visited a few friends at The Evergreen State College. Anyone familiar w/ Evergreen knows that it isn't known for conservative dress or values, but I didn't recieve one stinkin' comment from friends about my kilt. The only thing I heard was someone at the conference saying "nice skirt." I forgave him because the comment's tone was fully positive.
I recieved more comments on my new beard than the kilt, I was a bit disappointed. Oh well, I thought you guys might be able to empathize.

George,
I would take that as a compliment. People are looking at you and not you outer appearances. Well done on the beard

I've had the exact same reaction from people. I'll run into a friend I haven't seen in years, and they'll be all "Whoa! Beard!"
I'm a big fan of beards for that reason. Everybody just calls me lumberjack or mountain man these days, and the ladies like to nuzzle the beard. Pair it with the friendly-people-and-women-attracting kilt, and every day is an adventure.
But I don't worry so much about food getting on my kilt as I do about food in my beard.

I do understand! sometimes it's discouraging when you don't get the chance to explain and defend the chioce to wear a kilt. On the other hand, at Evergreen State you can run into anything, so the kilt is probably not that notable. They're usually just glad that people are wearing clothes at all! This is the school that really did allow a cousin of mine to write a dissertation on underwater basket weaving.

Turn it on it's head!
The lack of comment about your kilt indicates acceptance, so that kilt wearers are not seen as an eccentric minority-rather a part of the mainstream of life-that kilt wearing is entirely normal.
Something I'd suggest we should all be looking towards: for that acceptance will in turn lead to the kilt being accepted as say office/work wear; and at functions without comment or question.
So rather than regret-you should be jubilant that another success has been registered on the kilt wearing horizon.
For the reality is that there should be nothing special about wearing the kilt-rather it being a normal and sensible way for a man to dress, and a way that is accepted in all walks of life.

This post got me thinking...
If we all came to the realization that kilts were as much a non issue as jeans, would Xmarks cease to exist? The reason Xmarks is here, is because kilts are an issue... am I correct?

I don't think Xmarks would cease to exist. It's here, I feel, more for the love of the kilt, than for any perceived controversial nature of kilt wearing. Take a look at all of the different forums on the web and you'll see what I mean. There are nascar forums, woodworking forums, cooking forums and too many more to mention. These are all forums that exist simply because people find a common bond in the joy they share within the subject matter of the forum. As long as there are kilts, there will be kilt forums.
