Las Vegas Highland Games April 16-17
Wanna head over there, wondering if anyone's gonna be there from the board...?
Also seeking advice from the locals as to which motels are reasonably near the Floyd Lamb State Park which looks like its a long way from most lodging.
Thanks,
Ron

If by some chance I can get an interview at Nevada State College at that time, I would go....

My late uncle, Burke Maxey, has a building named after him at the university of Nevada. Think its the Desert Research Institute building. Not sure if its on the Reno or Las Vegas campus, he was active at both for many years.
Not sure where Nevada State College is though. But go for it, come on out. It sure ain't Georgia

NSC is in Henderson, so I think that isn't too far from Las Vegas.
Close enough for a side trip to a Highland Games I would gather!

Henderson probably boarders Las Vegas by now.
Looks like about a 30 mile drive to the site of the Games in N.W. Las Vegas by freeway and boulevard.
Come on, come on.

Report on Law Vegas Games
First, should say that I'm a recent lurker here, I suppose.
The games were held as scheduled. Attendence perhaps 2500 for the two days(not sure of exact number). Publicity had been less than stellar the preceding couple of weeks. Vendors I talked to considered the event as break-even or small profit for them but well worth the trip for the lovely venue. General opinion on vendors' row seems to have been that it came off pretty well for a first time event, and should be better next year.
The Ceilidh on Saturday night in the Fremont Street Experience (free to general public) was wild.
All in all a lovely weekend. My wife is determined to take over the publicity and do it right next year. (Gulp. I just know who's going to be drafted for grunt work.)

Welcome Aboard.
I never did get over there after all, waited too long to reserve a room and the only thing online was over $400 a night.
My fault for sure, but sad about not going. Don't know the town well enough to chance going without a reservation and hope something we could afford was available.
One thing that would have helped attendance would have been lodging information about motels nearby (if any). I even emailed some of the committee and they just didn't know anything about motels being locals.
So, a suggestion for next year...if I knew of reasonable priced motels near the venue I just might get off my butt and make a reservation.
You're gonna love this board.

Ron,
Plenty of rooms are generally available at Motel 6 and equivalent on a weekend when nothing special is happening on the Strip, and nothing was.
I expect that by the time you contacted them they were biting themselves in the back. The number actually involved in the runup was small and they were new to it, "let it be a learning experience" as the saying goes. They worked like Hell, but they trusted people who'd promised to do something to do it and they were unfamiliar with a lot of the resources for bringing off something like this. That's not to say that they totally screwed up, they brought it off with pretty good marks, but with a lot more tsuris than they need have suffered.
