    Cheap 'Casual' Kilts?

12oz wool, only available in a few tartans for 69 squid - apparently.

Don't touch them - unless you like throwing your hard-earned money down the drain!

I know this shop well and have been inside (just once!) to examine these kilts - only they were priced at about £35.00 at that time. I am sorry to say this, but these possibly-Made-in-Pakistan 'kilts' are rubbish.

The shop is a Tourist trap and sells pretty much the same tat as the tourist trap 'Highland' shops on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

I questioned the Manager of one of the Edinburgh shops a few years ago, asking him how he had the afront to call these things 'kilts'. He admitted that it was not expected that they would be worn, except possibly to fancy-dress parties. Rather, the American and Japanese tourists who, in the main, were the people who bought them, would take them home and pin them up on their Den walls along with all the other souvenirs of their European tours!!

That, from the horse's mouth, should give you an indication as to the quality of these 'kilts'.

Thanks for the report Hamish, it's good to know we have friends that have actual "hands on" experience with all this stuff. Once again you are a wealth of information.

Thanks for the link, as we're ALWAYS looking for something out there that will "hit the target".

For now... I just don't see ANY tartan kilts that are a better value for the money than the USAKilts Philabegs, or any style of BearKilts. They are both sewn with the care in the aprons and pleats, and won't "break the bank" in comparison with the counterparts.

Keep posting new sites and vendors. There's GOT to be someone out there that we're missing!

Likewise, if anyone finds the "resellers" of authentic kilts... POST THEM! Like HighlandHeritage.com, we like the authentics for the "right price".

I've heard from tartan industry leaders in Scotland that they are having a major problem with people importing very cheaply made "kilts" from Pakistan (cheap material, cheap construction, just cheap all around) and then selling them (either to tourists in Scotland, or over the internet) as genuine Scottish products.

    It's an ongoing problem...

I've noticed these on ebay quite a bit, taken a closer look and the item is in Pakistan, with the free sporran against the pleats, basically haning on your backside. Just looks like a shady operation... take a look.

    Almost humerous.

I'll also be VERY interested to see the new StillWater Kilts in the "standard" version. There have been improvements made for 2005... and they address the things that XMarks guys have mentioned.

This MAY be the tweeking that they needed to make their kilts worthy of our dollars. I am MORE than happy to report when I find something that's a value for the guys here.

If they're up to snuff... we may have an alternate source for casual tartans! The tapered aprons, double-fringe edge, and the pleat-to-sett could make a HUGE difference. Remember... there's not ONE casual kilt company with a conscience that hasn't gotten better with time.

I'm with you here, Jimmy. Stillwater has recently announced that they will be offerering the Irish National tartan in the standard version. I'm just waiting for them to get one in my size so I can replace the economy version I bought (before your review, sadly).
