It's the end of an era! The Scottish Lion have been around as long as our shop (over 30 years) and owe their success to their mail-order catalogues. I suppose they feel they deserve a well-earned rest now!

But for those who may have been dependent on The Scottish Lion in the past (probably not including anyone who posts here, as we are all Internet-savvy), Matt (at the Tartans Museum) and I (at the Thistle Stop Shop) will still be around to provide traditional Highland attire, tartan accessories and garments of every description, jewellery, quaichs, etc., etc.! So tell your grannies and aunties to transfer their loyalties to us!

Thanks for the plug, Cyndi! I think I told you that I have had, in the past, customers order from our gift shop by using the S. L. catalog, even!

One thing you can say now that was not true 30 years ago is that there is no dearth of Scottish import shops now.

Boy, I'm with Hank on this. My dealings with Scottish Lion were often nightmares. One book on Scottish history, ordered for my nephew for Christamas arrived the next June or so.

The attitude on the phone always seemed a tad surley for an outfit who spent so much on catalogs and distributed them so freely. I seemed to get at least two each mailing.

When I noticed something I liked in their catalogs was usually able to go on line and find a much better price. I always figured their marked was folks with even less knowledge than me. Maybe its a good sign that our clansmen are learning.

I will miss the tartan layouts in their catalogs. Long ago cut them out an taped them by my various clans on my working genealogy charts...and they did have a fair price on Thompson's book.

    So,

Of those who have ordered sale items, has anyone received them or even been billed for them yet?

I for one haven't, and I just may cancel.....

Over a week, and not even a charge or ship? I am sure they are busy, but geez, no wonder they went out of business.....

To all those that may have ordered something online from the Scottish Lion over the last couple of days, you may want to call them to check to make sure they received your order. I placed in order for a sherrifmuir jacket, that was about half off, and some other things, and never received a confirmation e-mail or anything. After a week, I gave a call. They had no record of my order. By the time I called, the jacket was already gone, the cook books I wanted were gone. In fact, while I was on the phone with the lady, I was making my new order from their website. Their website stock is not up to date. Practically everything I was asking for on the phone that I saw online was sold out. I was able to finally find a lovat blue jacket in my size, but it will not be shipped until late March "due to all the orders we have". I shopped almost exclusively at The Scottish Lion, and never had one bit of trouble, but they pissed me off with this. The part that makes me boil is that they still have the Sherrifmuir jacket in size 50L still listed on the website, even though it has been sold.

I just called myself, and several things are on 'backorder'. They are also shipping as items become available.

As per Raphaels's email concerning the rental kilts - they are made in standard sizing, so use your waist when ordering. They are approximately 24" in length.

Yep, ordered a jacket on the 3rd and it arrived today. Great looking, great quality and almost fits but that is me not them. Unlike the 50R with 26 inch sleeves that Matt used as an example, I'm a 42 but need a 26.5 inch sleeve. 42L comes real close and a 44 anything swallows me.

Oh, and on the charge, they don't charge until they ship.

I'm going to miss the SL. I've been stopping in there for years when I vacation in Maine and NH. Place won't seem the same without them. Cyndi and Matt, looks like the ball is in your court. While I haven't had any dealings with Cyndi yet, I can vouch for Matt. He's a number one customer service kinda guy and I'm still grinning over getting his first box pleat kilt sold on his website.

That all sounds a little weird. If they are closing, I assume they are only selling off what they have in stock and not ordering any new merchandise, correct? So how on earth could anything be on "backorder"? Either they have it, or they don't. And if they have it, why wait two weeks to ship it? I know they must be busy, but to have someone order a jacket that they have on hand now, and tell them they can't ship it out for two weeks.... just seems a bit odd.

Maybe they are doing like some of our NC furniture dealers? I can't think of the number of "Going Out of Business, Our Doors Are Closing, Court Ordered Liquidation" sales they have run and I have avoided. Just to see them still in business. I doubt it though.
As for their attitude, you have to remember...they're yankees and not just plain'ol yankees but New Englanders. That's a whole 'nother story.

I'm buying some children's outfits from their kilt rental stock to supplement my own kilt hires (including one for the 3-yr-old that we talked about, Matt), and I have to wait for those because they still have a couple of bookings left to fulfill with them. But I wouldn't think that would apply to a day jacket, because they don't rent those. Maybe they have already let most of the employees go and there are just a couple of people handling everything, including packing and shipping. Just a guess!
