Clan adoption?

I was in the grocery store today wearing my tan UK Survival Kilt. I got a few compliments (my calves are my best feature). Twice I was asked to which clan did I belong.

My story is that I am only partly Scottish. I am adopted. My adoption papers were rather sparse. All they said was that I was of Scottish, Russian, Polish and Scandanavian descent. I was born in Boston, MA. That is it. As I look pretty Celtic and I dig kilts, I declared that I am "mostly" Scottish. Of course I really have no idea how much...

So I would love to answer the question of "which clan?" with a name and not a paragraph.
You guys know of any clans that take in stray mutts (who's tartan is not too ugly

)?

I would be remiss in not suggesting, since I am a member of it, the Scottish District Families Association (SDFA), which is for those of Scottish heritage who cannot identify lineage from one of the well-known clans or families of Scotland.

The SDFA does a great job in promoting the district tartan to those who may not have a connection to a particular clan.

You could always claim Clan Chattan. That was much less a family clan than a confederation of families.

Or you could ask Bear@bearkilts, also known as "The MacBitseach of Clan MacBitseach" to let you join Clan MacBitseach. (MacBitseach is Irish Gaelic for son of a bitch. http://macbitseach.blogspot.com/) I don't think he has an official tartan, but the Celtic Pride would work. :P

You can join any clan you like, as in times gone by highlanders would ally themselves to a clan for protection , find an association and join, just because your ancesters were not members doesnt mean you cant join, one of the best is my own clan -clan Cameron, there are braches everywhere and we still have a clan chief and museum, the vast majority of people called Cameron are not blood reatives, people would often change their names to the clan name for protection (dont mess with me im a Cameron!!) for me Tartans are more about clans than surnames- I keep seeing posts can I wear this Tartan Im not called McDonald/Cameron/Sinclair/or whatever so what. its nice to have a connection but for me I see Tartan bout a connection with a clan- Not all scots were part of a clan and the vast majority of Tartans are modern designs purely with a view to selling people "their" tartan,the number of Tartans avialiable never ceases to amaze me G8?? Singh? Heather?/spirit?/ heritage of? scotland/ whatever next its purely a marketing exercise. and I think thats missed by many people.

COSCA i just checked out these guys it seems a good organistaion but theres not a singles Scot on the board of executive officers or trustees so Im not sure how much weight can be given to them , they seem to deal with clan associations in america. a very interesting website, however I would look to Scotland and Scottish associations based in scotland for your clan, anything else is watered down whisky!

No offence meant to any groups or associations based outside of Scotland !!
