I think more young people, particularly men would react positivly to kilts. But risk being kicked out of the "pack" for it. when the alpha male lets everyone know it's ok, they all agree.
But what does it say about us that we naturally assumed they were going to make a negative comment? in a sense doesn't that make us like all those who stereotype us for wearing kilts? something to consider. it isn't easy when the last 9 packs of teenage boys ripped on you, to give pack number 10 the benefit of the doubt.
