The Buff is also very popular here in Norway. I have one with a fleece edge to it so it folds into a kind of bobble cap. My children use them all year round. They're fantasic.
I havn't worn it with the kilt "YET"

Freelander I am a great fan of the Buff scarf and it works really well as a hat under a cycle helmet. However when I wear it that way on its own it looks like a kippah.

glengarry
I know these posts are several months old, but I am wondering if anyone else, aside from me and those in pipe bands who are forced to do so, wears a glengarry with their kilt. I just love the glengarry. I just think it's such a smart looking top to any kilt outfit, specially when worn with a clan badge on the side. In my opinion, the glangarry is great for any and all occassions where the kilt is worn (outdoors). I bought mine last year in Edinburgh. I think it's great.
Anyway, I noticed that most guys who wear the Balmoral or a beret. I had to chime in for the few of us out there who might be wearing the glengarry with the kilt. I'll have to post a photo of me in my glengarry soon.

Glengarry...
I have a diced glengarry I wear as part of our Scottish society's colour party for parades, etc. I usually don't wear it in the summer, since it provides so little protection from the sun (although the balmoral isn't much better!)
I agree that the glengarry is quite the "natty" piece of headgear.
Cheers,
Todd

Scotus, I agree with you on the glengarry. Mine is plain black, although I like the diced ones too. I wear it mostly at predominantly Scottish events, like games. It has that jaunty sort of look. BYW, the local pipers call them "C-hats".

Scotus - The Glengarry is quite sharp with a kilt although I don't wear mine outside my pipe band uniform. As a matter of fact for our summer uniform we are replacing the glengarry with a British foreign services pith helmet, much cooler for the hot humid summers here in the northeast.
Macman - around my neck of the woods there are friendly rivalries between the Irish and Scottish pipe bands the Irish refer to our glengarry as "p-caps"
