Scotus, I agree with you on the glengarry. Mine is plain black, although I like the diced ones too. I wear it mostly at predominantly Scottish events, like games. It has that jaunty sort of look. BYW, the local pipers call them "C-hats".
Air Force, Army, and USMC Flight Caps have the same moniker hung on them.
Mine is all black as well. I've seen the diced ones; however, I think the black Glengarry is just such a dignified top to a kilt outfit, in my opinion. I wear my silver Drummond clan badge on the black ribbon.
I have 3 balmorals that I wear with the kilt.
Black, Green and Fawn as well as a dark blue Glengarrie. It's either one of those or a "flatcap"
in the same tartan as the kilt and no, I'm not bald either although I do sometimes shave my head.
