I want that 8 yard full feel and the nice deep pleats and a buckle fastener. I also perfer Tartan kilts as well. I have thought long and hard about getting a plain kilt but just can't bring myself to it.
I love the deep pleats and I like the look of like 20+ pleats.
Maybe the idea of a tank like kilt but with no rise or something.
    Miah,
This is the only pic I have of my 6 yard 16oz wool classic cut . bcmtnbka snapped it at Kilts Night when the Mayor yelled at me from his car because he couldn't find my store. (In his city?)

It's a comfy kilt and you don't have to get that tartan.

    rise...

I'm like Blu; I like the traditional rise of the kilt.

Also, remember that the concept of wearing trousers low on the hips is a relatively modern concept as well; if you look at civilian and military trousers from the 19th and early 20th century, you will see that they were "high rise" as well.

    Cheers,

    T.

I'll throw in my two cents worth, even though it's a little late.

I was kind of bugged by the fit of a traditional the first time I wore it. I didn't like it sitting so high, since I usually wear my trousers down low. The first time I wore it, it seemed too high, and felt really weird. My USA Kilt hits right at the belly button, and that took enough getting used to, but the extra 2" above the navel on the tank seemed like way too much. When I'd sit, it felt like I was wearing a girdle or something (and yes, I'm only assuming that's what a girdle feels like.) After a while, it was like Blu said, I started to really appreciate the back support. Now, my USA Kilt seems a little short to me, even though it's right to the navel, and hits the middle of the knee.

I guess it would be good if you could try a rental or something, so that you could see if it was for you, but I realize that rentals cost about 1/8 of a kilt!

Maybe that is it a rental wear it for a few days and test drive it. Thanks for the idea.

I second that completely, although for a different reason. Having a nice tightly-buckled kilt with a decent rise and a nice snug belt really gives you something to "push against" when you're piping!

maybe if I wore kilts full time it would be different, but as I wear pants to work and more often, it just feels odd. Like Cajun said though my Military trousers were semi high waisted and worn above my navel. So maybe it would just take getting used to. Now to look for the "good deal".

Well, I can only say the traditional fit is the best thing ever! I have a LOT in front of me, so trousers sit quite low and tend to slip in the back. My kilts sit 2-3 inches above my navel and it is perfect. Even my back pain only comes again when I have to wear trousers, never when I wear kilt!!

So get used to it, your body will thank you!

Dont tell the guy "get used to" the bondage of the high waist!

High waist is ok for Occasional wear but we no longer wear our trousers that way so why kilts?

"Cuz its always been like that" is what I'm hearing?

Years ago when I first saw "casual" on a kiltmaker website I thought FINALLY! But no, it only meant reduced yardage.

Thanks, Bear, for what you're doing.

Low waisted with same yardage/weight/tartan choices as high waisted is a much needed step in the evolution of the kilt into a more common dailywear clothing option.

I was very apprehensive at first about the high rise also, but, after putting one on, there really is nothing quite like it.

Not only does it feel nice to have that snugness in the back, my paunch gets hidden!!

For me, I like the rise.....
