There's a big cultural difference between the US and Mexico. They see thing differently in many ways and machismo is an important component. I've seen that with the Mexicans that have immigrated to my area. They tend to be very conservative and rigid in their views of what's acceptable and what isn't. When one is a guest in another culture it's just courtesy to avoid making them too uncomfortable with you.
