Blu, it is not 100% certain that you will damage your kilt by wearing a sporran chain, but the possibility is there and, when it happens, boy do you regret it 
I have heard of and seen examples of terrible damage to the aprons of expensive kilts, and I simply will not risk it.
Also, the damage is hardly likely to occur overnight! It might take some years to manifest itself. On the other hand though .......... just one dodgy link in the chain........!!
