I also like #1 the best but #3 is a close second.

It's also not beyond the realm of possibility that a very small mill might do a run of ten-twenty yards of a wool/acrylic type blend that would be more affordable for "casual" kilts.

I agree with the poly vis blend. It would be a lot more affordable for some of us. We need to know how many people would actually be serious about getting into the project. The more, the cheapest, right?

Certainly, but there's also the issue of quantity.

So for example, there are small local mills and large handweavers that will make 5 - 10 - 20 yards of 100% wool for kilts. What if nobody will touch a wool blend or PV in anything less than 100 yards, then.. well... it doesn't matter that the PV retails for $18 a yard and woold/acrylic retails for $25 a yard while the wool retails for $65. If nobody will make the stuff in anything but wool, then that's the way it goes.

When we're talking about lots this small there may be limited options to who might produce it. I mean, I really don't know, but don't be SURE that a discount-style blend fabric can be made in small enough quatities. It MIGHT be possible, or it might not. We have lots of knowledgeable people on this board. Let's wait and see.

All I an tell you is what is available from the cloth weavers that I work with. I can get a length of 16 oz worsted wool woven for just one kilt.

I have to place a minimum order of 60 yards for 100% cotton. And poly-cotton, or poly-acrylic, require minimum runs of 120 yards each (if I remember correctly). I don't have any sources for poly-viscose.

That's not to say that someone else might not know of a mill that will do smaller runs of blended material. If anyone wants to take the initiative and do the research, go for it.

    Aye,
    Matt

At the risk of being accused of stating the obvious, I want to mention that in Matt's picture gallery the tartans are listed with number 2 first:
    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/a...hp?pic_id=1865

    Then number 3:
    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/a...hp?pic_id=1863

    and finally number 1
    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/a...hp?pic_id=1861.

In other words, "number 1" is the *third* tartan listed. It confused me, so there might be at least one other person so confused... (or maybe it's just me).

My opinion? Numbers 1 and 2 are similar with the strong solid blue background and prominent white stripe. Between them I prefer number 1. It's less busy and number 2 looks more like a dress tartan with it's greater use of white.

Then I compared nnumber 1 and number 3. Very different. Number 3 almost glows with the yellow. Interesting effect. It's background colour is more light blue than dark blue and the main white stripe is less prominent. I *really* like number 3, but it's still a toss up between number 3 and number 1. I suspect that a group of people will find it easier to settle on number 1.

Count me in for polyvis or wool-acrylic. Wool is too expensive for me to commit to.

I like number one. I wouldn't bother with PV on something like this. For me it would be wool or nothing. I have PV kilts, and they are ok...I really would rather go with wool.
