At the risk of being accused of stating the obvious, I want to mention that in Matt's picture gallery the tartans are listed with number 2 first:

In other words, "number 1" is the *third* tartan listed. It confused me, so there might be at least one other person so confused... (or maybe it's just me).

My opinion? Numbers 1 and 2 are similar with the strong solid blue background and prominent white stripe. Between them I prefer number 1. It's less busy and number 2 looks more like a dress tartan with it's greater use of white.

Then I compared nnumber 1 and number 3. Very different. Number 3 almost glows with the yellow. Interesting effect. It's background colour is more light blue than dark blue and the main white stripe is less prominent. I *really* like number 3, but it's still a toss up between number 3 and number 1. I suspect that a group of people will find it easier to settle on number 1.
