On my last trip to the Grandfather Mountain games I saw so many non traditional kilts that I finally started to count them. I a little over two hours there were 20+ UK's, a few AK's, and a dozen or more from makers I didn't recognize. And yes, there were a few made from mamma's old curtains, and a couple off-the-rack sort of tartan skirts. As far as I could see no one paid any attention whatsoever. Even back in the early 70's when I was competing in athletics my home made 'kilt' didn't garner a single comment, or even second glance.
