I have very little sewing experience, but am getting ready to try and make a nice 14oz wool kilt soon. The book was quite scary the firsat read through, but now I understand a fair bit of it, and am just trying to find the time to start.

agreed. while I am looking forward to the wool tank I will be making, perhaps a section on casual kilts of alternative fabrics. Just a thought as it gives people another mutlti use for your great book.

I've already talked with Steve Ashton, and he's going to collaborate with me on a short chapter on non-traditional kilts. He and I are also talking about doing a separate book altogether on the art of non-traditional kiltmaking. It's a question of time and money.

Good idea to put in a section on repairs. There's a section on alterations, but nothing specifically on repairs.

I agree completely about the 16 oz fabric. I love working with 16 oz. I'm right in the middle of several kilts in 12 oz, and it just isn't the same.

I actually found it easier to convert some of my measurements to metric. Take the pleating for example. My kilt was done to the line. For me, I took the back waist measurement in metric and devided it by the number of pleats needed. This gave me the total width of the exposed portion of each pleat. It was really easy then to use the metric tape and pin each pleat before sewing. I only had to make sure that each pleat was so many centimeters wide centered on the stripe. 3 measurements on each pleat, sew it, and move to the next.

I find it a pain to use a calculator to figure measurements. Converting from decimal to fraction is easy with a chart. But, with metric you make your calculations and there is no need for conversion.

In your book Barb you mention how being left handed might be a bit difficult to make a kilt well I'm just letting you know I made a 8.5 yard kilt a self colour one and it looks and fits great I'll send you pictures now I'm working on one for my wedding .
Thanks for writing a greta book and when you write one about untraditional kilt I love one of those or if you have advice I'd love that too.

OK, so I am finishing the apron and underapron edges today.... I see the instructions for sewing down the apron edge, and the underfacings of both aprons, but don't see to sew down the underapron edge.......

did I miss something, or did I mistakenly sew down the underapron edge on my first kilt???
