New SportKilt features

Just wondering, the things I've received from SportKilt have all arrived reeking of cigarette smoke and had to be immediately washed.

Have they cleaned up their act on that front yet?

Since I'm on vacation and Sportkilt HQ is only a 30-minute drive from where I live, I drove down today. Nice people. Met James. I wore my Ramsay USAKilt and everyone wanted to have a look at it. They seemed mighty impressed.

Now I love my poly-vis USAK's because (among other reasons, i.e., easy to care for, pleats hold well), here in Los Angeles, there's just not a lot of need for heavy wool. But I was really surprised how light the Sportkilt tartan kilts were. You know those flannel pajama bottoms you can buy at any big department store? Their tartans are about that weight. I think a good sneeze would have sent the apron flying up.

However, their new Boulder kilts are not too bad. It seems like they're still working out all the kinks, but it seems like a good, solid, knocking-about item. I ordered one in a solid grey, made with a heavy fabric that's roughly the weight of denim. I should have it in a few weeks.

My two SportKilts are essentially "hanger weights" I'm on vacation too, maybe should take them to my Navajo seamstress and see if she can sew down some pleats and crop the hem to a less dress-like length.

My main question about SportKilt HQ is are they still smoking there? My SK products have always arrived with the stink of cigarette smoke on them and needed immediate washing.

I didn't see/smell any smoke while I was there, but then I was only in the office/showroom part of SKHQ. There may very well have been a whole legion of smokers just beyond the doors. You should call them and tell them you were displeased. Maybe you'll get another free kilt out of it!

Oh, I did. They started out on a bad foot with me, but seem to be more customer oriented now.

Well, after two and a half weeks of waiting, I got my new Sportkilt boulder.

DISAPPOINTED!

Here's why. As I said before, I had made the trip down there and selected the material that I wanted, a fairly heavy dark grey duc. Since two weeks had passed, I wasn't sure, but I felt like what came in the mail was a lighter-weight fabric than what I had selected..

And that's not all. Stand up and put your right hand on your right thigh. See how the pleats go all the way around and a bit under the apron? Well, instead of that, there was nothing but flat fabric. A five-inch open space sans pleats.

So I go down there again today, see James again. I was ready to have it re-done instead of getting a refund, as long as they moved me to the head of the line. Everyone at Sportkilt HQ was real nice and customer-friendly. No attitude or anything like that. They were more than agreeable. But I asked James about the fabric weight, and he admitted that he had used a lighter-weight fabric.

"But that's not what I asked for," I said.

He replied that the lighter weight was what he liked to work with, and that he didn't have any of the heavier weight on hand.

"Then why did you tell me that you had it on hand?"

He didn't really have an answer for that, and then offered me a refund, which I accepted.

Needless to say, I was pissed. I'm the kind of person that gets really quiet when he gets angry, though the look that goes along with my anger is... unpleasant. They knew I was not happy at all, and for that I am glad.

So yeah. Got my money back. But never again will I send any money in Sportkilt's direction. I could see from how it was made that they tried to make a good product, and that the pleats that were there were done properly. It was the wrong fabric thing that really angered me. I mean, they had my email and my phone number. How hard would it have been to just call and ask?

I couldn't imagine dealing with that sort of business. Basically, you've sold me on any other company.

After browsing the Sportkilt "Wall of Fame", I think it would be more appropriately titled "Wall of Embarrassment". Many of the kilts? hang like A-line skirts and numerous tartans that they've used are so small they are almost unrecognizable as tartan. I admit I'm very much a traditionalist but I've got nothing against an economically priced kilt. But Jimminey Kristmas... How many bad reviews does it take before folks get the picture. It's pretty obvious that Sportkilt have neither the knowledge nor the technical skill to build a proper KILT... or if they do, they're not letting on. For the price of a couple of their trashy looking things, one can purchase a real kilt elswhere. Personally, wouldn't wear one of their "kilts?" as underwear! Sportkilts thrive mainly because P.T. Barnham was right.

Bottom line... CAVEAT EMPTOR.
