I'm 6'0" and 60 years old..wear my Utilikilts the same place I wear my jeans, under my belly. I wear a short (also have a short inseam, 30"). I like the kilt to be under my belly and at the top of my knees.
Nice thing about the UKs is the funny pleated apron...drops between your legs automatically when you sit...don't have to worry about what's showing like with the traditional kilt apron style. Always feel a bit more casual wearing them for that reason.
Best way to size is like most kiltmakers say. Measure your waist where you're gonna wear the kilt and do the length with a yardstick while kneeling.
I think you'll lose a lot of the freedom of movement if you get it any shorter than mid-knee.

"I'll have a kilt please, a nice hand sewn tartan, 16 ounce Strome. Oh, and a sporran on the side, with a strap please."
