Newbie wants to make a kilt....

I'm a real newbie but i'm looking for a clear explenation about how to make a kilt. I found some websites but those aren't really clear.

Welcome!!!! There is a thread here under traditional kiltmakers. I think its called Barb's Pose. Barb is a kiltmaker that has published a book about kiltmaking. For the reviews Ive seen, its very clear as to directions and stuff. Check it out.

WELCOME! If you want to make a kilt you definetly have come to the right place. As some of my other kilted brethern have said Barb has a book out and even though I have it, I still have not found the time to make a kilt yet. Many of the guys here have and even had a little help from their wives and from the pictures look great. Do not hesitate to ask questions that is one of the reasons this forum is here!

Get Barb Thompson's book The Art of Kiltmaking...you should find her website by checking her posts under kiltmakers or traditional kilt threads...

Yeah i heard about those books more often. But i don't want to use it. I have made one kilt allready and i did it without any help from books and i think i did well. I just need a clear sewing instruction, and an intruction of the direction of the pleats.

Yeah but i don't want to buy a book for that small piece of information. At least can you tell me, The flap at the front, With a Male kilt, does it go from the left to the right? or from the right to the left?

And the pleat direction? clockwise(seen from above) or counterclockwise?

That is a basic sort of characteristic of kilt construction that, if you really did make one, and did a good job of it, based on instructions from the web, that you really should know.

I don't want to be a dink, but listen to the others here.

You DON'T know as much as you think.
A few answers here really won't be enough.
You need AT LEAST Barb's book to make a decent kilt.
The web instructions are OK, but as you can already tell, they aren't enough.

Just pony up the money, order it, and get to it. I can't emphasize what a great investment the book is.

Not only does it have excellent instructions for kilt construction, it also has a great section on history and what to look for/what makes a quality kilt.

Many of us have bought it, and we use it, and we love it.

There is plenty of support here for us would-be kiltmakers, but to try and teach the most basic, most important aspects of kilt-making....

Really, please, buy the book. Barb is not only the author of the book, she is a very nice person, and is very helpful. It is only fair and right that someone who wants to learn the kiltmaking art pick up her book. We get lots of free support here, so advising someone to buy the book, and to buy it, is a VERY small price to pay for the sharing of all that knowledge...

Okay, sorry, then don't buy the book...

Kilts for men open on the right side.

Pleats go every which way depending...even box pleats.

The book is full of details needed to make a kilt that doesn't look like a manskirt...well worth the price for the many things you'll encounter as you go along. Take a look at the tread for Barb's posse where a whole bunch of guys are making kilts and talking about it as they go. Think its under the kiltmaker's forum...you'll see what you're getting into if you're making a true kilt and not a manskirt.
