It doesn't happen too often

so wear the kilt with pride today (I did).

Well in the US, and especially in the south western states, today is Cinco de Mayo. For those of you you who live elsewhere, Cinco de Mayo started as a celebration of the Mexican army defeating an invading French army. It all has to do with the brief Hapsburg rule of Mexico. If you are interested here is a link http://www.vivacincodemayo.org/history.htmAnyway today Cinco de Mayo is now pretty much just an excuse for people to drink lots of beer and eat Americanized Mexican food. Sort of how St. Patrick's Day seems to be more about drinking then celebrating Irish heritage.

Getting back to Grahams post, any day that features an overinduldence in food and drink seems like a great day to wear your kilt.

Of course, everyday is a great day to wear the kilt.

Cinco de Mayo, the Fifth of May, is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when Mexican forces defeated a French force attempting to occupy Mexico City. French Emperor Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III) desired a colony in the Western Hemisphere, and enlisted Maxmillian, of the Austrian Hapsburgs, and his Belgian wife Charolette (Carlotta) to rule as the monarchs of Mexico. While the Mexicans defeated the French at Puebla, Maxmillian eventually did reign in Mexico, while Mexican forces under the leadership of Bentio Juarez, the "Lincoln of Mexico", attempted to drive the French out -- The occupation ended in 1867, when Maxmillian was executed.

Ironically, the Mexican commander at Puebla, Porfirio Diaz, became absolute dictator of Mexico after Juarez died, and was thrown out in a bloody revolution in 1910, that made Zapata and Pancho Villa house-hold names.

Easy on the cerveza brothers...St. Paddy's day is now the #1 day for DUIs (DWI, OWI) during the year. I'm sure Cinco de Mayo is right up there too.

Maybe a hooded beach baja with my black workman's today...?
